Closing the diaper gap in Texas

Focusing on closing the diaper gap, the Texas Diaper Bank strategically creates its programs to target the diaper gap’s root causes: physical, mental, and economic well-being. Through a combination of programmatic components, each program intently tackles one or more of these areas to ensure long-term impact.

Parenting Essentials

The Parenting Essentials Program supports under-resourced families in Bexar County by addressing critical health and social needs through quarterly distributions of diapers, period supplies, and other essentials, alongside referrals to community resources for rent, utility, and food assistance. Originally launched during the pandemic, the program has evolved into a sustainable model promoting health equity and stability for families with children aged 0-36 months. By alleviating diaper need and period poverty—issues impacting 1 in 3 U.S. families—the program helps reduce financial strain, improve access to opportunities, and break cycles of poverty, fostering long-term health, dignity, and well-being.

Senior Care Essentials

The Senior Care Essentials program supports seniors aged 60 and older by providing quarterly deliveries of high-quality incontinence supplies directly to their homes. Designed to promote comfort and dignity, the program tailors products to individual needs, offering pads or liners for more active seniors and briefs, bed pads, gloves, and other items for those with advanced needs. This discreet and reliable service ensures seniors can manage incontinence effectively, reducing health risks and maintaining confidence.

Incontinence affects nearly 50% of seniors, often resulting in health complications, financial strain, and social isolation. By removing cost barriers and addressing these challenges, the program enhances quality of life and fosters independence and social engagement. While limited resources prevent expanding to six-month supplies, the program remains dedicated to sustained support, empowering seniors to live with greater health, dignity, and autonomy.

Flo With Dignity

The Texas Diaper Bank’s Flo With Dignity Program addresses period poverty by providing essential menstrual supplies every three months to women in need, primarily serving mothers already enrolled in the diapering program. This holistic approach ensures that families in crisis receive comprehensive support, meeting both their diapering and menstrual health needs. By offering reliable access to period products, the program alleviates financial strain and fosters dignity and stability for vulnerable families.

Period poverty, the lack of access to menstrual products, hygiene facilities, and education, impacts millions nationwide, with low-income families in Texas disproportionately affected. Research shows 1 in 4 women struggles to afford period supplies, and 84% of teens report missing or knowing someone who missed school due to lack of access. The Flo With Dignity Program combats these challenges by providing safe and affordable alternatives, breaking cycles of stigma and poverty while promoting health, opportunity, and equality for women in the community.
